Boudoir (pronounced bŏo dwăawr) is translated from french as a woman’s bedroom or a private sitting room. As such, boudoir photography is a sexual, romantic, intimate or even naughty photo shoot that takes place in a studio, a client’s bedroom or even a hotel room. The focus in boudoir photography is to compliment and flatter the woman’s body, regardless to her size, shape or age.
When it comes to boudoir, I think there are two types of women: Those who embrace the idea and have done or eventually will take part in a photo session of such kind, and those who do not understand the need for a boudoir experience. There is an understandable psychological barrier that one may need to overcome in order to do a boudoir shoot. The idea of being semi dressed or even naked in an intimate setting, with a photographer, can be uncomfortable to say the least. However, if you relax, enjoy the freedom of being shamelessly feminine, and have trust in your professional photographer, you may be surprised.
There are many reasons to take boudoir pictures. Some women enjoy giving an intimate album to their significant other while others want to remember how beautiful they looked 25 years from now. On a personal note I believe there is a certain rush and excitement that comes with the territory. From preparation of outfits and makeup, to playing model for a day in the most outrageous way – all are part of a unique experience.
My history on both sides of the camera only reinforced what I always knew. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Women come in all shapes and sizes, all colors and ages. Their beauty is an expression of their confidence, and how comfortable they feel in their own skin. Having a “third party” capture their beauty in such a special way, with a different vision and fresh set of eyes, can be the beginning of an empowering journey to knowing a whole new you.
